Utilities are working to fortify the country’s electrical grid in response to climate change and related outcomes increasing the frequency of power outages nationwide. The use of Viper® Reclosers is a growing solution to restore power to customers after a temporary outage has occurred by resetting a given circuit. Equipped with advanced sensors and remote communication capabilities, Viper® Reclosers are installed on utility poles to enable utilities to monitor and control distribution networks in real time. These instruments play a crucial role in automating the electrical grid by quickly detecting and isolating faults, reducing outage times, and improving overall reliability. By automatically restoring power to lines after temporary faults, Viper® Reclosers minimize service disruptions and enhance grid efficiency, making them essential for modern, smart grid operations.

Wade Trim helps our utility partners determine optimal locations for Viper® Recloser installation through circuit investigation using distribution network modeling and analysis software. Locations are assessed for their ability to provide the greatest coverage, integrate with power substations and other protection equipment, and enhance system reliability. Site visits are completed to physically test for circuit viability and findings are translated into work orders that include engineering designs for installation.
