The City of Ann Arbor’s efforts to build better places for people to bike has been recognized by The League of American Bicyclists with a Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) award. Out of the 496 Bicycle Friendly Communities certified by the League in the US, only 35 are designated at the Gold level with Ann Arbor as the first such community in Michigan. The award cites Ann Arbor’s commitment to improving conditions for all people who bike through investments in bike education programs, regular bike events that promote and encourage people to choose biking, pro-bike policies, and bike infrastructure.
Working with SmithGroup, Wade Trim has been involved in planning, evaluation, design, and construction of numerous infrastructure projects to expand the City’s bikeway network through the downtown area. Two-way protected bikeways have been completed by the Downtown Development Authority on William, First, and Division Streets. The bikeways feature green pavement markings and are separated from automobile traffic by buffers comprised of bollards and markings and in many instances raised concrete curb islands. A fourth downtown bikeway is currently being designed along Catherine Street/Miller Avenue. In addition, Wade Trim will be leading the design of the State and Hill Streets Improvements project that is planned to feature a two-way protected bikeway along State Street.
